FAQ
Frequently asked questions
What is a contract number? +
A unique identifier assigned to a contract or agreement so it can be filed, searched and referenced — often built from the year, a contract-type acronym and a sequence, e.g. 26-NDA-0042. Full guide: what is a contract number.
What is a smart contract numbering system? +
A scheme with three parts: the financial year, a short contract-type acronym (NDA, MSA, SOW), and a sequential number. It lets you identify a contract's year and type at a glance. Details: designing a numbering system.
Can I use ContractCode numbers on real contracts? +
No. ContractCode generates mock numbers for testing and demos. Real agreements receive numbers from the organization's own contract management system, and a number alone never makes a document legally binding.
What do NDA, MSA and SOW stand for? +
NDA = non-disclosure agreement, MSA = master services agreement, SOW = statement of work, MOU = memorandum of understanding, SLA = service level agreement, PO = purchase order.
Should contract numbers restart each year? +
Many organizations restart the sequence each financial year because the year is embedded in the number. Others run one ever-increasing sequence. Either works as long as it is consistent and numbers are never reused.
Is the ContractCode generator private? +
Yes. It runs entirely in your browser using crypto.getRandomValues(). Nothing is sent over the network, no cookies are set, and nothing is stored. See our privacy page.
Can contract numbers be reused? +
No. A retired contract number should stay retired. Reuse invites confusion and breaks every filing, email and system record that referenced the old number.
Does a contract number make an agreement valid? +
No. Contracts are formed by offer, acceptance, consideration and usually signatures. The number is an administrative identifier for filing and reference, not a source of legal validity.
